Job Losses in a Recession

Here is a chart of employment gains/losses by month. 

It shows 1960 to 1988. The shaded areas are recessions. 

In four of the five recessions during this period, there were multiple months of job gains. This is completely different from the 1990 to 2020 period.

So, we could have a recession without a huge pickup in unemployment.
